Will Smith, Tom Holland to star in animated movie

Will Smith and Tom Holland will star in the animated movie “Spies in Disguise,” Variety has learned.

The project is based on “Pigeon: Impossible,” a 2009 original animated short film by Lucas Martell that followed a secret agent who nearly triggers a global conflict when a pigeon gets stuck in a government-issued nuclear briefcase. The feature-length film is a Fox Animation production, with Blue Sky Studios and Chernin Entertainment overseeing the project.

Nick Bruno, who previously worked on “Epic” and “The Peanuts Movie,” and Troy Quane, who worked on “Ice Age: Collision Course” and the upcoming “Ferdinand,” will co-direct the film.

Smith is best known for his work in “Men in Black” and “Independence Day.” He previously lent his vocal talents to “Shark Tale.” Smith's upcoming films include “Bright,” a sci-fi adventure for Netflix, and “Aladdin,” a live action version of the Disney classic that will play the Genie.

Holland hit the A-list playing Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” He will appear in “Chaos Walking,” a dystopian sci-fi adventure, and has a supporting role in “The Current War,” a historical drama.

“Spies in Disguise” will open on January 18, 2019. Under newly minted studio chief Stacey Snider, Fox has been bolstering its animated output. It wants to make an animated film every year, and recently inked a longterm co-production and development deal with Locksmith Animation.

Smith is represented by CAA. Holland is represented by WME and Curtis Brown Group.
