Legendary singer Abdul Jabbar laid to eternal rest

Legendary singer and freedom fighter Abdul Jabbar was laid to eternal rest at Mirpur Martyred Intellectual Graveyard following his last namaj-e-janaza at Dhaka University Central Mosque after Zohar prayers today. 

Thousands of people from all walks of life, including politicians, educationists, cultural personalities and leaders of different socio-cultural organisations attended the janaza to pray for the eternal peace of the popular singer. 

Jabbar, a prominent Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra singer, died of multi-organ failure yesterday at the age of 79 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). 

Jabbar inspired people through his songs from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Liberation War in 1971. He was awarded Bangabandhu Padak (1973), Ekushey Padak (1980), Swadhinata Padak (1996) and different national and international awards.

Earlier, the body of Abdul Jabbar was taken to the National Shaheed Minar from Birdem mortuary by an ambulance around 11:30am.

Sammilito Sangskritik Jote organised the function where thousands of people including his fans, relatives and friends thronged to pay their respect and to say 'good bye' to the popular singer who captivated them for nearly five decades. 

Dhaka district administration gave guard of honor to the freedom fighter at the National Shaheed Minar and one minute silence was observed to pay respect to the legendry singer. 

Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdury paid respect to the legendry singer on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. 

Later, Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader, also general secretary of Awami League, paid respect to the late singer on behalf of the ruling party.

Besides, Cultural Minister Asaduzzamn Noor, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Food Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam, Barrister Fajle Noor Taposh, Advocate Subtao Chowdhury of Gonoforum, Gazi Mazharul Anowar and actor Uzzal led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and leaders of National Awami Party (NAP), Bangladesh workers party and Bangladesh Shyamobadi Dal have paid their respect to legendry singer Abdul Jabbar.
