Armed muggers snatch Tk 76 lakh

Muggers took away Tk 76.28 lakh from a British American Tobacco agent and a private hospital staff in Gazipur and the capital's Dhanmondi in broad daylight yesterday. The BAT employee was also shot and injured before he was robbed of the cash in his possession.
BAT agent Mohammad Harun along with two colleagues went to the Southeast Bank branch in Shibbari of Gazipur to deposit around Tk 49.28 lakh, reported our Gazipur correspondent.
As he came out of a covered van, five to six youths closed in on him, fired a few shots at him and snatched away the bag with the money, witnesses said. One of the bullets pierced the left side of his waist.
The criminals fled the scene on motorbikes.
With severe injuries, Harun was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The other incident happened around 12:40pm in front of the Pubali Bank branch on Satmasjid Road at Dhanmondi, said Ashok Chowhan, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Dhanmondi Police Station.
None was hurt during the mugging.
Four employees of Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital reached the bank in an official car, said Habibur Rahman, chief security officer of the hospital.
When Ruhul Amin, an assistant accountant, stepped out of the car with a bagful of cash, four people barred his way and demanded the bag.
“They came by foot from nearby,” Habibur said.
Three of the muggers brandished firearms and took away the bag from Ruhul. The criminals then left the place on two motorbikes that had been waiting nearby, he added.
Ruhul and another assistant accountant of the hospital deposit money to the bank branch on alternate days every week, except for the weekends.  
“Usually we deposit nearly Tk 7 lakh a day but on Sundays the amount gets bigger as we have to deposit money collected on Fridays and Saturdays,” Habibur said.
He added that both Ruhul and the other accountant were known as loyal staff of the hospital.
A case was filed with Dhanmondi Police Station in connection with the incident, accusing some unidentified people.
