Alal, 5 other Jubo Dal men on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court today placed six Jubo Dal activists including its president Moazzem Hossain Alal on a three-day remand for each in a case filed on charges of planning to carry out subversive activities during today's hartal.

Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor passed the order after Mohammadpur police produced the six leaders and activists of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of BNP, before the court with a 10-day remand prayer in the case filed yesterday under the Special Power Act.

Police yesterday arrested Alal along with 62 activists of the BNP and its front organisations from his Lalmatia residence in Dhaka.

The law enforcers also sought a 10-day remand for Md Jahangir, Jatiyatabadi Shamik Dal president of ward No. 46, but the court did not place him on remand as he fell sick inside the courtroom during today’s trial procedure. He is now undergoing treatment at National Hospital.

This was the second highest mass apprehension of BNP men from a single spot since March 11 last year when police had arrested over 164 BNP men after raiding the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan.

Sammilito Islami Dal Samuha, a platform of Islamic parties many of which are components in the BNP-led 20-party alliance, on Wednesday announced a countrywide daylong hartal today protesting the government's failure to arrest Abdul Latif Siddique who was sacked from the cabinet and the Awami League for his comments on Hajj pilgrims.
