al-Qaeda threat: Rasel on 10-day remand

A Tangail court today placed Rasel Bin Sattar Khan on a ten-day remand few hours after a case was filed against him for spreading” online the audiovisual message purportedly from al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri calling upon Muslims in Bangladesh to wage intifada (popular uprising).

Kamal Hossain, a deputy assistant director of Rab-12, filed two cases -- one for sedition and another under Information and Communication Technology Act--Tuesday night for spreading the message.

Rab arrested Rasel, 21, a seventh semester student of Tangail Textile Institute, at a student mess at Majhipara area in Tangail town early yesterday on allegation of spreading the message said to be from al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shahadat Hossain of Tangail granted the remand today after Sub-inspector of Tangail Sadar Model Police Station Abdullah Al Taibie, also investigation officer of the case, filed a petition before the court seeking a 10-day remand.
