Local Awami League and affiliates placed barricades along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway in Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas today protesting the imprisonment of ruling MP Abdur Rahman Bodi in a graft case.
All types of vehicular movements came to a halt since morning as the supporters placed fences in 21 points on the highway rallying for his release, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent.
District bus owners’ group’s General Manager Ronjit Das said all buses were suspended for security purpose since 11:30am. “Many buses are stuck on the road.”
“Efforts are on to clear the road and the situation is being handled cautiously to avert chaos,” said Shyamal Kanti Nath, Cox’s Bazar superintendent of police. “Additional force has been deployed.”
Earlier this morning, a Dhaka court jailed Cox’s Bazar-4 lawmaker Bodi upon surrender in a case filed by watchdog Anti-Corruption Commission over amassing wealth illegally.
