AL can’t ensure due share of Teesta water: BNP
Demanding a fresh parliamentary election, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said a government elected by the people can only ensure due share of Teesta water.
“The incumbent government will not be able to bring Teesta water for its people as it has surrendered everything to India,” he said while addressing a rally at Jalfoy in Tangail Sadar upazila in the afternoon on way to Teesta Barrage in Nilphamari.
BNP began its two-day long march towards the Teesta Barrage this morning demanding fair share of the water of the Teesta river.
After a short speech by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, around 200 leaders and activists started the long march from in front of Amir Complex at Azampur in the capital’s Uttara around 9:00am.
While addressing the rally, Fakhrul said, “Our long march is not a programme against the government. Rather, we are holding the programme for ensuring people’s due share of Teesta water.”
The long march has been organised for protecting the right of people of the country and to save its agriculture, he said.
The programme is being held to create consciousness among the people and place our demand for due share of Teesta water at national and international level strongly.
BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam, Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal and Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie are participating in the long march.
Around 10:30am, the caravan that includes at least 50 vehicles stopped on Kaliakoir bypass road where Fakhrul addressed another brief rally.
After an overnight stay in Rangpur, the party will hold a rally in the city at 9:00am tomorrow before starting off towards the barrage.
The march would end after another public rally at Dalia area of Nilphamari at 11:00am tomorrow.
The BNP-led 19-party alliance in a meeting on Thursday night extended its support for the programme.
Yesterday, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan issued a note of warning, saying those who would cause anarchy would face legal action.
Boro farmers in four northern districts are suffering because of India's massive withdrawal of Teesta water. The water flow in the Teesta river has dropped to 650 cusecs from 3,500 cusecs around this time last year.
