Shah Ahmad Shafi, amir of Hefazat-e-Islam, resigned from the post of Director General of Al Jameyatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa, popularly known as Hathazari madrasa, amid the student unrest over the last two days.

Shurah Committee -- highest decision making body of the madrasa -- member Salauddin Nanupuri, told The Daily Star, "Among 12, five Shurah Committee members and senior teachers of the madrasa were present at the meeting where Allama Shafi stepped down from the post of DG of the madrasa. But he will remain in the post of advisor of the madrasa till his death."

The recent development came hours after education ministry issued an order to shut down the madrasa until further notice.

Earlier, the madrasa students demonstrated over several points of demand including the removal of Hefazat-e-Islam Chief Ahmad Shafi's son Anas Madani from the institution.

Following the students' demo and shutdown notice, a meeting of Shurah Committee was held at the madrasa where senior members of the committee including Ahmad Shafi were present.
