Abduction spree spreads panic

2 more abducted in Noakhali, Narayanganj; 18 held, 3 rescued in separate abduction incidents in 3 districts

Following a spree of abductions from different parts of the country since last Sunday, a panic has gripped the people.
Hours into the killings of seven abducted people in Narayanganj, incidents of kidnappings has been reported from Noakhali, Kurigram, Naogaon and Tangail.
Three abductees were rescued and 18 alleged kidnappers were detained in the districts.
Two police constables and their source were held on charges of abducting an NGO official in Kurigram and 11 held while abducting a businessman in Naogaon.
Besides, two abducted persons were rescued and four kidnappers held in Tangail.

NOAKHALI
In a latest development, a business man has been abducted this afternoon from Begumganj of Noakhali district for Tk 5 lakh as ransom.
The abductee, Abul Bashar, 42, is a local sand and brick vendor of Ailapur village of Ailapur union, reports our Noakhali correspondent.
Two miscreants abducted Bahsar on a motorcycle around 12:30pm and demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom over the phone around 2:30pm to the victim’s family, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Begumganj Model Police Station, quoting family members.
Law enforcers have been trying their best to rescue the victim after his family members lodged complaint with the Begumganj police, said Ehsanul Kabir, assistant police superintended (ASP) of Begumganj Circle.
Earlier, another businessman has been abducted in Narayanganj Friday night sparking fresh street protests in the district today.

KURIGRAM
Two police constables and their source were held yesterday while sharing ransom money which they got after kidnapping a local NGO official in Sadar upazila.
The law enforcers also rescued the victim, Maidul Islam, director of Gram Unnayan Sangstha, who was abducted on Wednesday.
The victim and police sources said constables Atikuzzaman, Mamunur Rashid and Shah Alam and one Manu Maker kidnapped Maidul at gunpoint in Collegepara area around 6:00pm Wednesday when he was returning home after meeting his younger brother.
Manu was a source of Mashiur, a sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The abductors detained Maidul at a house in Mogalbasa area in the town and demanded Tk one lakh ransom from his family.
After bargaining with the kidnappers, the victim’s family paid at Tk 10,000 ransom through bKash.
On information, police started to follow Manu when he went to an agent of bKash to withdraw the money.
A team of police caught Atikuzzaman, Mamunur Rashid and Manu red-handed around 12midnight when they were sharing the ransom money at Sadar Hospital Intersection.
Based on their information, Maidul was rescued half an hour after the arrest.
Victim’s family filed an extortion case with Kurigram Sadar Police Station in this regard.

NAOGAON
Locals caught 11 abductors during their attempt to kidnap a local businessman in Manda upazila of Naogaon Thursday.
They also rescued the victim, Bazlur Rashid, 35, the owner of Bismillah Cloth Store,  at Mithapuku Bazar and seized a microbus used in the kidnapping, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
Later, the agitating mob handed over all the abductors to police after giving them a good beating.
The kidnappers waylaid Bazlur near Fakirpara Eid Ground around 1:30pm yesterday and pulled him into a microbus forcibly.
He was returning his Rampur residence from his shop at Moinam Bazar, said Abdur Razzak, inspector (investigation) of Manda Police Station.
Locals who witnessed the abduction put barricade on the road near Mithapur Bazar area around 2:30pm and managed to caught the kidnappers, said the police official.
On information, police rushed to the spot and arrested the abductors, said Kafil Uddin, additional superintendent of police in Naogaon, adding, they were interrogating the detainees.
The alleged abductors are -- Faruk Hossain and Belal Hossain of Chak Prachi in Sadar upazila; Kajal Hossain, Sabuj Hossain and Hasan Ali of Shyalgasi village; Al Amin of Dangapara; Nasir Uddin, Shafiqul Islam of Chokkhopa; Shamim Hossain and Rabbi of Harirampur and Mehedi Hasan, the microbus driver, of Patichola.

TANGAIL
Police rescued two youths and arrested four kidnappers using mobile tracking system at Kalihati in Tangail last night, the local OC said.
Both the youths were abducted from Jamgora area of Ashulia Wednesday evening, he said.
Law enforcers also seized a microbus used in the kidnapping, the police official added.
The arrested abductors are: Ershad Ali, Asadul Islam, Ismail Hossain and Azizur Rahman.
