The father-in-law of Enamur Rahman, the ruling party lawmaker from Savar, was rescued in Malaysia Friday night, two days into his abduction from Kuala Lumpur.

Fazlul Huq, 65, a retired official of a private organisation, was abducted on Wednesday when he was going to Kuala Lumpur International Airport to catch a flight for returning home.

Family sources said the abductors using a Malaysian Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card called the victim’s family members and asked them to pay Tk 10 crore as ransom.

Later the kidnappers were reportedly convinced to reduce the amount to Tk 1 crore.

According to their instructions, the family members went to Sirajganj last night to hand over Tk 70 lakh of the total ransom to the abductors.

As two persons received the money from the victim’s relatives, the members of Rapid Action Battalion managed to catch them. They were identified as Al-Amin and Nazrul.

Talking to the daily last night, lawmaker Enam, also owner of Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar, said the family members had talked to Fazlul after he was rescued around 10:00pm (Bangladesh time).

All the people involved in the abduction are Bangladeshi nationals, he added.

Fazlul used to stay at his own apartment in Kuala Lumpur whenever he goes there on business purpose.

Malaysian police also detained a Bangladeshi national, Delawar, who used to drive Fazlul to several places there by his taxi.

Major Rumman Mahmud, deputy director of media wing at the Rab headquarters told The Daily Star that Fazlul who holds a Malaysian passport had frequently visited that country.

The Rab official said that Fazlul took with him large amount of money to start a restaurant business in Kuala Lumpur.

Fazlul used to hire a Bangladeshi national, Delawar, who used to drive Fazlul to several places there by his taxi. On Wednesday Delawar instead of driving Haque to Kuala Lumpur airport took him to a farmhouse and abducted from there.

On the same day Delawar forced Fazlul to phone his son Tutul and not disclose the fact that he has been kidnapped.

On Delawar’s orders Fazlul told his son to send Tk one crore on an emergency basis as he needs the amount for business purpose.

Over phone Tutul told his father that he had taken the necessary amount with him. But Haque insisted that he needs the money and asked his son to send the amount immediately.

Next day, Fazlul again called his son Tutul and asked whether he has managed the money or not.

Tutul told him that he was unable to collect the money and sensed that something wrong has happened to his father.

At one stage, the kidnappers talked to Tutul and told him that his father has been abducted. They also asked him to send the amount immediately as ransom.

After talks he was agreed that Tk 30 lakh to be paid to the abductors from Malaysia and the rest amount will be given to their designated persons in Bangladesh who will contact Tutul.

Tutul informed the matter to Rab and on the elite force’s advice Tutul contacted with one of the abductors.

The kidnappers asked Tutul to drop the money at a specific point on the slope of the approach road to Jamuna Bridge near Tangail.

Accordingly the money was dropped at the specified spot and two of the kidnapping gang appeared there to collect the money.

The Rab personnel who were present at the vicinity arrested the two cousins- Al Amin and Nazrul.

Rab said, Al-Amin’s brother Abdul Alim is a member the gang that abducted Fazlul Haque. Al-Amin and Nazrul told Rab that they are construction workers in Dhaka.

Rab sources said Abdul Alim who has been living in Malaysia for last 10 years had talked over phone with Al-Amin numerous times on Thursday and Friday.

Using the two arrested criminals Rab contacted with the gang members in Malaysia and provided their phone numbers to Malaysian police through Bangladesh embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
