Abducted Ctg gold trader found alive
Gold trader Mridul Kumar Chowdhury was found alive early today in Comilla, six days after he was abducted from in front of his Chittagong residence.
A group of six people introducing themselves as Rab personnel picked Chowdhury up at gunpoint near his house in Hazari Lane of the port city on February 11 and since then he remained missing, family members claimed.
Squadron Leader Nazmul Haque, a deputy director of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-7, however denied their involvement with the incident.
The elite forces did not conduct any raid in the Hazari Lane area on the very day, Haque added.
Chowdhury was left at a paddy field at Kangshanagar Bazar in Burichang upazila of Comilla around 1:00am today, said Md Qamruzzaman, a sub-inspector (SI) of local Kotwali Police Station, quoting the family members of the kidnapped gold trader.
Chowdhury spent nearly two hours there and then found a night guard, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting the SI, who is also the investigation officer of the case filed after Mridul's abduction.
As he narrated his ordeal and sought his help, the guard took him to his residence and gave some foods.
Later, the guard gave Chowdhury his cell phone to call his family.
Chowdhury talked with his wife Shelly Chowdhury and brother Shimul Chowdhury over phone and informed them about his location, the SI said.
Shimul then called Chittagong Kotwali police who informed the matter to Burichang Police Station, the SI added.
On information from Burichang police, a team of police from an outpost near Kangshanagar Bazar rescued Chowdhury around 4:00am.
A team of Chittagong Kotwali police, which went to Comilla to bring back the businessman, started for Chittagong around 11:30am, the SI said.
Mridul's wife and Shimul were accompanying them, he added.
Earlier after the abduction of Chowdhury, the jewellers and residents of Chittagong city's Hazari Lane declared to stage a token hunger strike before Chittagong Press Club for tomorrow demanding safe return of Mridul.
Bangladesh Jewellers' Association of Chittagong had also announced to keep their shops in Chittagong district closed for tomorrow.
