9 Rab men sued for murder

A murder case was filed today against nine members of Rab-14 including a company commander and two others for torturing a businessman of Brahmanbaria, leading to his death seven days into capture.

In the case statement filed with Brahmanbaria Magistrate’s Court, victim’s brother Mehdi Hasan alleged that the Rapid Action Battalion members tortured Shahriar Alam, 43, at a Bhairab camp in Kishoreganj.

Maj AZM Shakib Siddique, company commander of Rab-14 in Bhairab, is among the accused, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.

The plaintiff said the elite force members picked up Shahriar from his home in Brahmanbaria on April 29.

On April 30, Shahriar was handed over to Nabinagar Police Station with injury marks on his body. The police sent him to jail the same day.

As his condition deteriorated, police admitted him to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital on May 4 and later shifted him to Comilla Modern Hospital for better treatment. He died in the hospital the next day.

"The Rab men poured hot water on my head and in my mouth and pushed two boiled eggs through my anus," the plaintiff quoted Shahriar as telling the family members at the hospital the day before his death.

"They (Rab) also beat me and kicked me with gumboots," Mehdi also quoted Shahriar as saying.
