9 cops injured in gunfight with robbers

Nine policemen and two robbers were injured in a gunfight between the law enforcers and the highway robbers at Bariura of the district's Sarail upazila early yesterday.
Four sub-inspectors of Sarail Police Station -- Istiak Ahmed, Abdul Alim, Abu Bakar Siddik and Abdul Khaled Sakib -- are among those hurt.
The injured policemen have been undergoing treatment at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital and Sarail Upazila Health Complex.
Police said some 10 to 12 highway robbers halted their CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway around 3:30am, thinking it was carrying passengers. The policemen were patrolling the area.
As the policemen got out of the vehicle, the gang threw homemade bombs at the law enforcers. Police opened fire on them, triggering a gunfight that left
nine policemen and two robbers injured.
Police arrested the two robbers, Taklil Hossain Toikka and Faruque Mia, from the spot. The others managed to escape.
The robbers were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.

A case was filed in this connection.
