7 held for counterfeiting foreign brand cosmetics

A mobile court yesterday sentenced seven people to jail terms ranging from two years to six months for counterfeiting cosmetics and toiletries of foreign brands in the capital's Chawk Bazar.

The court also fined each of them Tk 1.5 lakh and destroyed 20,000 pieces of the products worth Tk 20 lakh, of five shops and a factory at Khan Market in Chawk Mogholtuli.

Of the convicts, shop owners -- Din Islam, Delwar Hossain, Md Shameem, Hemayet Khan and Sayed Hossain -- were jailed for two years while Md Samad for one and a half years and Omar Faruk for six months.

They had been manufacturing and selling products in containers similar to those of the renowned foreign brands and marketing those countrywide, said Executive Magistrate AHM Anwar Pasha who led the drive. Rapid Action Battalion-10 assisted the drive.
