6 killed in Habiganj road crash

Six people including two of a family were killed and nine injured when a truck rammed a human hauler and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Habiganj Sadar upazila this morning.

Five of the deceased were identified as Yusuf Ali, 50, of Srimongol upazila and Ahmedul Haque, 60, of Sadar upazila in Moulvibazar, Zainal Mia, 25, of Shayestaganj and Nabarun Bibi, 45, and her daughter Ambia, 20, of Baniachang upazila of Habiganj.

All the deceased were passengers of the three-wheeler, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

SM Nazimuddin, officer-in-charge of Habiganj Sadar Police Station, said a truck hit a human hauler, locally known as tempo, and an auto-rickshaw at a time in Sutang area around 7:30am.

The accident took place when the tempo was overtaking the auto-rickshaw, the OC said.

Two passengers died on the spot while four others were declared dead at Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital.

Six of the injured were rushed to the Sadar hospital while three others shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Protesting the accident, locals blocked the highway but lawmen cleared it later.
