6 BGB men hurt in Kushtia road crash

Six members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were injured as a pick-up van carrying them hit a roadside tree in Kushtia town early today.

Four of the injured were flown to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) by a helicopter in critical condition, reports our Kushtia correspondent quoting Major Tareque Mahmud of BGB battalion 32 in Kushtia.

The accident took place at Jugia-Kanabeel area around 4:45am when one of the tyres of the pick-up van deflated and the driver lost control over steering, Maj Tareque said.

Six, out of seven onboard BGB personnel, sustained severe injuries during the accident, he added.

They were first rushed to Kushtia Medical College and Hospital from where Subedar Mohiuddin, 45, Lance Nayak Abdul Halim, 40, Lance Nayak Obaidur Rahman, 38, and Lance Nayak Safiqul Islam, 39 were sifted to Dhaka CMH as their condition deteriorated.

The other victims -- Nayak Mizanur Rahman, 45, and Lance Nayak Serajul Islam, 42 -- are undergoing treatment at the KMCH.

The border guards were returning to their camp after conducting a drive in Jhenidah, the BGB official said.
