53 gold bars seized at Ctg airport, 1 held

Customs intelligence officials recovered 53 gold bars weighing 6.18 kilogrammes and detained a passenger of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong this morning.

The seized gold would worth Tk 2.65 crore, Nahid Nawshad Mukul, assistant director of customs intelligence, told The Daily Star.

The officials recovered the gold bars from the passenger of BG-024, which landed at the airport from Dubai around 7:30am, the customs official said.

On suspicion, customs officials conducted a search on, Anis Chowdhury, hailing from Boalkhali in Chittagong, and found the gold bars on him, he added.

The recovery came 10 days after the customs intelligence officials recovered 54 gold bars weighing 6.298 kgs and worth Tk 2.7 crore from inside the shoes of three passengers of a Biman flight BG-048 from Dubai on March 27.

Filing of two cases -- one with Patenga Police Station and another under regular case with the customs authorities -- were under process in this connection, the official said.
