500 kg jatka seized in Munshiganj

Coastguards and officials of the district fisheries department seized 500 kilograms of jatka (hilsa less than 10 inches long) from two launches in the Dhaleshwari River yesterday.
Sadar upazila fisheries officer Shahjada Khasru said a joint team of coastguard and the district fisheries department conducted drives in two Dhaka-bound launches named MV Karnaphuli-3 and MV Farhan-2 in the morning and seized 500 kilograms of jatka.
The owners of the hilsa fish managed to flee the scene, sensing the presence of the team, Khasru added.
The seized hilsa were later distributed among local orphanages and madrasas.
The government imposed a ban on catching jatka for eight months from November 1 last year to boost production of the popular fish.
