5 vehicles torched in Dhaka, elsewhere

Miscreants torched and vandalised five vehicles in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Laxmipur today.

None was hurt during the attacks that took place on the 26th day of the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s countrywide blockade.

In Dhaka, a bus was set on fire near Sadarghat around 10:15am, sources at Fire Service and Civil Defence said.

Unknown miscreants set a bus of Glory Paribahan ablaze on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Bhulta in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj around 6:30am, our correspondent reports quoting Mehedi Masud, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of the local police station.

Local rushed to the spot and doused the flame, the police officer said.

Our Noakhali correspondent reports, pro-blockaders set fire to a cement-laden covered van at Poddar Bazar in Laxmipur Sadar upazila.

The miscreants also vandalised two CNG-run auto-rickshaws at Darbeshpur in the upazila, said Iqbal Hossain, OC of Sadar Police Station.

Meanwhile, a truck helper was injured as his vehicle fell into a roadside ditch while escaping an arson attack by alleged blockaders at Porahati in Jhenidah Sadar upazila around 7:30pm yesterday, said Shahbuddin Azad, OC of Sadar Police Station.

The front part of the truck was slightly damaged, the OC said.

The 20-party alliance is observing the indefinite blockade since January 5 protesting the government restriction on holding a rally of the alliance.
