5 outsiders shown arrested in police case

Five alleged Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists held today were shown arrested in the police case filed for yesterday’s clash that left one student dead and several shot at Sylhet’s Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust).

The arrestees were outsiders who took part in BCL’s turf war at campus, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting Akhtar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station.

The five arrestees were identified as Sajal Das Anik, Joyanta Das, Emdadul Haque Khokon, Belala and Naeem Ahmed. They were held in a police crackdown launched at Pathan Tola area, adjacent to the Sust campus, this morning.

The only case filed over Chhatra League’s turf war was that of the police yesterday where 250 anonymous persons were sued, according to the OC. Family of dead Sumon Roy, BBA student of Sylhet International University who died in the gunfight, was preparing to file a case.

Following confessional statements of the detainees, police raided at the residence of a Sust Chhatra League activist Shiplu and seized a revolver and 19 daggers.

Meanwhile, students of Sust vacated the campus premises after authorities shut down the university sine die following yesterday’s clash. All male students were asked to break yesterday afternoon and the female students by today morning.

Yesterday, Sumon Roy, an outsider at Sust who joined the clash, died and 10 others including the university Proctor Himadri Shekhar Roy shot during a Chhatra League turf war.

The clash ensued between the supporters of Anjan and Shamsuzzaman Sumon, the former BCL convener of the unit, over establishing supremacy on the campus, additional deputy commissioner of Sylhet, Rahmat Ullah, said.

Gunshots were fired and several crude bombs were exploded during the fight which led the authorities to shut down the university in an emergency meeting.

The admission process for the aspirants of first year honours, which is scheduled to begin from November 25, will start on time, the VC said.
