5 of Marquez's best books

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Colombian author whose stories of love and longing brought Latin America to life for millions of readers and put magical realism on the literary map, died on Thursday. He was 87.
In 1972, Marquez was awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature and in 1982 the Nobel Prize in Literature. Here are five of his most notable works:

One Hundred Years Of Solitude (1967)

It tells the story of seven generations of the Buendia family in the fictional village of Macondo. In it, miraculous and supernatural events are combined with the details of everyday life and the political realities of Latin America. The characters are visited by ghosts, a plague of insomnia envelops Macondo, a child is born with a pig’s tail and a priest levitates above the ground.

Autumn Of The Patriarch (1975)

A flowing tale of a Caribbean dictator who dies and has his palace invaded by his people. The narrator remembers the life of this "General", a maniacally violent leader, known for serving up enemies to dinner guests and drowning children at sea.

Chronicle Of A Death Foretold (1981)

A thrilling novel about Santiago Nasar who is murdered in a small town by two brothers. The towns' folk knew it was going to happen - as did the victim - but nobody did anything to stop it. Twenty-seven years later, a man arrives in town to try and piece together the truth.

Love In The Time Of Cholera (1985)

A story of unrequited love that survives for half a century. In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall in love, but Fermina chooses to marry a wealthy doctor instead. Devastated, Florentino bides his time, reserving his heart for her. Fermina's husband finally dies and Florentino plans on declaring his love for her once again.

Memories Of My Melancholy Whores (2004)

This book by Marquez tells the story of an elderly newspaper columnist in Colombia, who on the eve of his 90th birthday, decides to make love with a virgin. He falls under the spell of the beautiful 14-year-old girl.
