Five Bangladeshi workers were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Saudi Arabia's Makkah yesterday.
The dead are identified as Faridul Alam, 45, Md Alam, 36, Ayub, 30, Mansur Alam, 30, and Najir Hossain, 35, said officials of the Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah. All of them hailed from Cox's Bazar's Eidgah area.
The injured, also from Cox's Bazar, are Md Islam and Joynal.
Four dead bodies were kept in King Faisal Al Shisha hospital and one in Al Noor hospital, Mokkamal Hossain, counsellor of the Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah, told The Daily Star over the phone last evening.
"Our first secretary has already gone to the hospitals. Details of the accident will be known after receiving information [from him]," said the counsellor.
Mokkamal said the accident took place when a minibus carrying the seven Bangladeshis lost control and went to the wrong side on Al Hijra street in Makkah around 9:00am local time. The bus then collided with another passenger vehicle before hitting two Saudi nationals.
The victims, who worked at a construction site, were going to their workplace, said the official, adding that all of them had valid Iqama (work permit).
Regarding their burial, Mokkamal said a decision on this matter would be taken after talking to victims' family.
Asked if the deceased would be given compensation, the counsellor said police will investigate the incident and it can be said only after the investigation is complete.
Md Chowdhury, brother of Ayub, said his brother had been living in Saudi Arabia with his family for the last 16 years.
