4 idols vandalised at Satkhira temple

Unknown miscreants vandalised four idols of Hindu goddesses at a temple in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira early today allegedly over a land dispute.

The criminals entered the temple sometime in the wee hours of today, Bimal Krisna Mandol, president of the temple committee, told our Satkhira correspondent.

They took four idols of goddess Basanti to a field 50 to 60 yards off the temple and damaged those there, he said.

The temple committee claimed that the idols of Basanti goddess were vandalised over a land dispute.

One Sunnat Ali Gazi of Dewali village and one Abul Kalam Azad of Chaltetola village took lease of over two acres including the piece of land where the temple stands, said Mandol.

The land is a vested property.

"There is a land dispute between the temple committee and the two persons since February centring the lease of the land and the vandalism is came in a sequel to this," Mandol added.

Gazi meanwhile denied the allegation and said they had no complaint regarding the land of the temple.

Sagir Miah, officer-in-charge of Shyamnagar Police Station, confirmed the incident.
