4 cops among 6 hurt in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

61,000 Yaba pills recovered from bank of Naf River

Six people including four policemen were injured in a “gunfight” between law enforcers and criminals in Moheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Friday.

Abul Kalam, a sub-inspector (SI) of Moheshkhali Police Station, is among the injured, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent quoting Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police station.  
Names of the three other police personnel could not be known immediately.   
As part of the ongoing anti-crime drive, police conducted a search at Nonachari village and picked up one Helal Uddin from his residence around 2:00pm Thursday for his alleged involvement in criminal activities in the area.
Following his confessional statement, police detained Helal’s close aide Sana Ullah from his residence at Andarkona village after half an hour.
Later, police along with Helal and Sana went to Kalarmarchara Chaliatali area around 3:00am Friday in a bid to unearth their firearms manufacturing factory.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, cohorts of Helal and Sana opened fire prompting the policemen to reiterate, the OC said.
Abul Kalam and three other cops sustained bullet injures during the “gunfight”, he said.   
Helal and Sana were also hit by bullets during the incident, the OC added.                   
The injured policemen were sent to Moheshkhali Upazila Health Complex while Helal and Sana were admitted to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital.
Police recovered two firearms and six bullets from the scene.
Meanwhile Boarder Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) members recovered 61,000 pieces of Yaba pills worth Tk 1.3 crore from the bank of Naf River at bordering Nityangpara of Teknaf upazila early hours today.
None could be detained in this connection.
On information, that a smuggling of the pills will take place through the river, BGB Teknaf 42 Battalion's Commanding Officer Lt Col Abujar Al Jahid led a drive at the spot and recovered the pills, quoting Maj Md Nazmus Sadat Soumya, deputy commander of BGB-42 battalion, the correspondent reports.
The smugglers might have fled the spot sensing BGB presence, he said.
