3 traffickers sued for firing in Bay
Bangladesh Coast Guard today sued three detained human traffickers for firing on a trawler in the Bay of Bengal that left five Bangladeshis killed and many injured yesterday.
The trio – two from Thailand and one from Myanmar -- has also been accused of trafficking people to Malaysia illegally, said Lt Gazi Harun-Ur Rashid, commander of Taknaf coastguards.
The case was filed with the Teknaf Model Police Station, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent.
In the morning, the coastguard personnel sent the bodies of the victims to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Five Bangladeshi fortune seekers were killed and at least 151 injured when a gang of miscreants from Myanmar opened fire on a trawler carrying over 300 people to Malaysia.
Coast Guard detained the human traffickers -- Thai citizens Sang and Mong (full name not known) and Myanmar national Abdul Gofur -- after towing the boat to St Martin's Island from the Bay of Bengal yesterday.
Among the injured, 29 Bangladeshis are undergoing treatment at the hospital since last night, said Moktar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station of Cox’s Bazar.
On the other hand, 285 Bangladeshis, who were on the trawler during the firing, were shifted to Teknaf from St Martin this morning.
Twelve more Bangladeshis remained missing since the incident occurred.
According to Bangladesh Coast Guard, the 120-feet-long trawler with 330 people on board set off for Malaysia from Moheshkhali coast in Cox's Bazar on Monday night.
