Three policewomen were killed and 26 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka district yesterday.

A speedy truck (Khulna metro-D-11-0279) knocked a requisitioned bus in the capital's Fakirapool crossing, which were carrying 34 female police constables to their duty station from Rajarbagh Mahila Police Barrack in the early hours.

Constables Mamni Khatun Monira, 20, and Aklima Begum, 22, died on the spot. Twenty-six others were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The truck driver managed to flee but the vehicle was seized by Motijheel police.

"Proper medical treatment of the injured will be ensured," said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

Visiting the injured at DMCH, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque hoped for their quick recovery and expressed condolence for the deceased.

Another accident took place near Jhilmil project in south Keraniganj in the afternoon, in which a truck rammed an auto-rickshaw with two passengers, killing them and its driver on the spot.

Female constable Selina Akhter, 23, was one of the passengers.

"Selina, a constable of our station, was returning from her duty at Kadamtali during her lunch break," said Jamaluddin Mir, officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj Police Station.

The identities of the other victims could not be known yet, the OC said. The bodies were sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue for autopsies.

The police could not find the truck or arrest its driver yet. The wreckage of the auto-rickshaw was kept at the station.
