3 cops withdrawn for assaulting journos in Barishal

Three policemen of Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) have been withdrawn for their alleged involvement in assaulting two photojournalists in Barishal on Friday.

The policemen -- Nayek Mohsin and constables Kawsar and Jahid of Barishal University Police Camp -- were withdrawn and attached to Barishal Police Lines today, said BMP Commissioner Md Sahabuddin Khan.  

A committee, led by Mokthar Hossain, deputy commissioner of BMP, has been formed to investigate the incident and submit a report within next five working days, the BMP commissioner also said.

Some policemen charged batons at Shafin Ahamed Ratul, photojournalist of local daily Desh Janapad, and Nasiruddin, photojournalist of local daily Dakshiner Mukh, when they went to Barishal University area to shoot photos at a coronavirus-prevention awareness programme on Friday evening, Ratul said.

Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Moshareaf Hossain had taken part in the awareness programme, he added.
