A Dhaka-bound train from Narayanganj hit a passenger bus at a level crossing at Titipapa area in the capital this evening leaving least three persons killed and eight injured.

All the three dead victims – two men and a woman – were on the bus of Balaka Paribahan, Abdul Majid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhaka Railway Police Station, told The Daily Star. Their identities could not be known immediately.

The injured victims were rushed to different hospitals, the OC said while describing the 10:15pm accident.

The accident took place 200 yards off Kamalapur Railway Station, the destination of the train.

According to witnesses, the passenger bus defied a signal and drove onto the rail track through the wrong side.

“When the bus driver realised that he would not be able to cross the track to a distance safe enough to avoid a collision, he tried to back off. But by then he did not have enough time for that too,” said the OC.
