Law enforcers released three women BNP leaders including its vice chairman Selima Rahman two hours after detaining them from in front of the party chief Khaleda Zia's Gulshan residence in the capital today.

Cantonment police freed Selima, lawmaker Rasheda Begum Hira and former MP Halima Newaz Arli after taking bonds around 3:30am, sources in the party said.

Earlier around 1:30pm, police picked up the three leaders when they were trying to enter Khaleda's house where the BNP chairperson has been confined by the law enforcers for the last two days.

The government yesterday foiled the BNP-led opposition's 'March for Democracy' by using excessive force.

Law enforcers did not allow Khaleda Zia, the chief of the 18-party alliance, to come out of her Gulshan residence and go to the rally venue at Nayapaltan. Stopped by security forces near the main gate of her house, the BNP chairperson announced that the march would continue today.

Later in the evening, the main opposition party at a press briefing said the opposition would continue to block rail, roads and waterways till the January 5 election was cancelled and their demand for holding the polls under a caretaker government was met.
