20-party demo today across the country

The BNP-led 20-party alliance has announced a three-day programme protesting the government's move to restore parliament's authority to impeach judges.  
The combine will stage processions and rallies across the country, excluding the capital, today. It will hold these programmes at least at 15 points in the capital tomorrow and also form human chains across the country on August 30.
At a press conference yesterday, BNP Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed announced the programmes at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters.  
“Although it is mentioned in the constitution that the government will take measures to separate the judiciary from the executive, the administration has moved to bring back parliament's power to impeach judges aimed at establishing its full control over the judiciary,” he said.
The BNP leader also said, “In fact, the prime minister's control over all judges will be ensured through the move.”
The cabinet on August 18 approved the proposal for amendment to the constitution to pave the way for restoring parliament's authority to impeach the Supreme Court judges for misconduct or incapacity.
According to the existing constitutional provision, the Supreme Judicial Council comprising the chief justice and two other seniormost judges of the Appellate Division look into allegations of misconduct against any SC judge and makes necessary recommendations to the president.
The president then takes steps as per the suggestions. He can also impeach a judge for having physical and mental incapacity to properly perform the functions of his office.
The current provision has to be scrapped to reinstate parliament's authority.
FAKHRUL WARNS HASINA
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday warned Sheikh Hasina of dire consequences for what he said was snatching people's rights to express their opinions by formulating the national broadcast policy.  
He was addressing a discussion organised by National People's Party, a component of the BNP-led 20-party coalition, at the Jatiya Press Club.  
Fakhrul also said there is still time for the premier to come back to the path of democracy, hold a free, fair and inclusive election through discussions with the BNP.
