Unknown miscreants gunned down two members of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) in Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati this morning.

The deceased were identified as Satya Chakma, 30, son of Bashi Chakma of Barkal upazila in Rangamati; and Bishu Kumar Chakma, 42, son of Robi Kumar Chakma of Laxmichhari upazila of Khagrachhari; reports our Rangamati correspondent.

Police said armed miscreants numbering 10 to 13 opened fire on Satya and Bishu around 10:30am when they went to visit the 18-mile area on Rangamati-Khagrachhari road as part of their organisational activities.

The miscreants managed to flee the scene without any resistance.

Mostafa Kamal office–in-charge of Naniarchar Police Station, told The Daily Star that the killings might have been taken place in a bid to establish supremacy in the area.

In a statement issued after the murder, UPDF press secretary Niron Chakam blamed the activists of Shantu Larma-led Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) for the killings.

The UPDF men became the victims of political vengeance of the PCJSS, he said.

On the other hand, the PCJSS assistant information and publicity secretary Sajeeb Chakma denied any role of his party men in the murder.
