2 schoolboys killed in Laxmipur AL-BNP clash

10 people injured

Two schoolboys were killed and 10 people injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League and BNP in Laxmipur Sadar upazila last night.

The deceased are Rabiul Islam Shimul, 14, a class VIII student of Pratapganj High School and Farhad Hossain, 16, a student of class X of the same school. 

The clash ensued around 10:30pm between followers of ruling Awami League-backed Nasir group and BNP-backed Solaiman Uddin Jisan group, for establishing their supremacy in the locality, witnesses said. 

The clash occurred following an altercation between the supporters of the two groups at Chandraganj Bazar in Deopara village of Sadar upazila. 

During the clash, both the groups exchanged several gunshots, killing Shimul on the spot and injuring 10 people including five with bullets. 

The injured were admitted to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital where Farhad succumbed to his injures around 11:30pm. 

Later, the Al-backed Nasir group activists set fire to the houses of BNP leader Ali Karim and Tofael Ahmed of the locality. 

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Rakib Ul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, when confirmed the incident.

Additional police were deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
