2 robbers killed in Sirajganj gunfight

Two robbers were killed in a gunfight with law enforcers on Dhaka-Sirajganj highway in Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj early today.

The deceased are: Al Mahmud, 30, and Monsur Ali, 27, of Baniagati village in the upazila, reports our Pabna correspondent quoting Emran Hossain, superintendent of police in Sirajganj.

Acting on a tip-off, law enforcers beefed up their patrols on the approach road of Bangabandhu bridge in the early hours of today, said the police official.

Sensing their presence, a gang of eight to 10 robbers, who took position on the highway for committing a robbery, opened fire at the law enforcers. In retaliation, police fired back triggering a 30-minute gunfight.

Mahmud and Ali came in the line of fire and died on the spot while their cohorts fled the scene, SP Hossain added.

Taking the advance of BNP-led 18-party countrywide blockade, the gang often commits robbery in the area, the SP added.
