2 'robbers' injured in gunfight with police in 2 districts

Two alleged robbers including a ringleader of a gang were injured in gunfights in Cox's Bazar and Jessore districts yesterday and the day before.

Ringleader of a robber gang was arrested after he became injured in a gunfight with the law enforcers in Kalatali area of Cox's Bazar town early yesterday, reports our correspondent.

Bullet injured Md. Shafiquar Rahman alias Shafiq, 30, was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Manzur Alam of Cox's Bazar Detective Branch police said, following a secret information, a team raided Uttaran residential area in the town at around 3:00am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers gang started firing at the police who also retaliated by firing back.

At one stage, police detained bullet hit Shafiq along with an LG and two cartridges while others managed to flee.

In Jessore, an alleged robber was shot in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and police at Mahamudpur in Bagherpara upazila on Sunday night.

The injured robber Abdul Karim, was taken to local hospital, reports UNB.

Qaiyum Ali Shikdar, OC of Bahgerpara police station, said on a tip-off that a gang gathered at Mahamudpur for committing robbery in a jewellery shop at Charabhita Bazar of the upazila, a team of police raided the area at about 11:30 pm.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers hurled some crude bombs at police. In retaliation, police opened fire on them, triggering a gunfight that left Karim bullet injured.

Later, police arrested seven robbers, including bullet-hit Karim, from the spot.

Police recovered a shutter gun, two crude bombs, a few home-made sharp weapons and a bullet from the spot.
