2 lakh yaba tablets seized

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) early today seized 2.15 lakh yaba tablets and some Tk 19 lakh raiding different places in Chittagong and Gazipur.

Five persons, including a ring leader of a yaba smuggling gang, were picked up during the drives, Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, director at Legal and Media Wing of Rab, said at a press briefing at the Rab Uttara headquarters this afternoon.

On information, a team of Rab-7 conducted a raid at Amin Contractor Road under Halishahar Police Station in the port city and detained Zahidul Islam alias Alo, and Jasim Uddin Rana, along with 20,000 pieces of yaba pills, a pistol and a private car, said the Rab official.

He said the detainees were waiting there to sell the contraband items to their clients.

Based on information provided by the two detainees, the elite force members carried out raids at several rented houses of the smugglers in the area and seized 1,90, 314 yaba tablets, the money and 37 mobile phone sets, three cameras and three laptops.

Three others – Md Abdul Malek Russel, Md Shahed and Md Zakir -- were picked up during the drives, Rab officials said.

Later, the Rab men conducted a raid at Tongi of Gazipur recovered 5,000 pieces of yaba pills.
