2 JCD men killed in AL-BNP clash

Hartal in Natore tomorrow, At least 42 hurt in Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajganj, Natore

Two BNP supporters were killed and at least 42 others injured throughout Natore, Rajshahi, Pabna and Sirajganj today in clashes between activists of the ruling Awami League and BNP on the first anniversary of the January 5 elections.

In Natore, two activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of BNP, were shot on the chest during clashes with Awami League men in Tebaria area of town around 10:30am.

Rakib Hossain and Raihan Ali rana were declared dead after rushed to a local hospital. Protesting the killing incident, BNP called a daylong hartal in Natore district for tomorrow.

The clash ensued when activists, armed with firearms, brought out processions, said Munshi Sahabuddin, additional superintendent of police of Natore. “Two JCD men were killed.”

In Pabna, at least 10 BNP activists were injured in clashes with ruling Awami League men near Pabna Press club around 10:30am, BNP general secretary Zohurul Alam claimed.

The clash said to have triggered when both parties were showing off in the area wielding sticks and bamboos while gearing for demonstrations.

Two private cars were vandalised during the clash, our local correspondent reports.

In Rajshahi, at least 10 BNP activists were injured in a clash with law enforcers at Dari Khargona area of the city around 10:30am. Two BNP supporters were detained.

Lawmen used around 40 rounds of teargas canisters and rubber bullets to tame the situation, said Iftekhair Alam, additional commissioner of Rajshahi police.

Meanwhile, seven BNP supporters sustain minor injuries at EB road in Sirajganj and eight in Sunamganj districts when both AL and BNP men locked in a stand-off this morning.

In Kushtia, pro-ruling party Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League chased at BNP men and vandalised several private cars and auto-rickshaws in town.

In Chapainawabganj, administration imposed section 144 in Shibganj municipality and Kansat Bazar areas in Chapainawabganj town till 8:00pm to avoid any untoward circumstances, said Irtiza Hasan, upazila nirbahi officer.
