Detectives arrested two alleged gold smugglers along with 80 gold bars weighing about 9.3 kilograms at Purana Paltan in the capital last night.

The arrestees are Shamsuddin, 51, owner of a money exchange firm in Purana Paltan area, and Kamrul, 40.

Acting on a tip-off, a special team of Detective Branch of police arrested Shamsuddin from Purana Paltan yesterday evening, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (public relations) of DB.

Kamrul was arrested from the area under Paltan Police Station, the DC said.

The detectives also recovered 80 gold bars weighing about 9.3 kgs of gold from their possession during the drive.

Present market value of the recovered gold would be around Tk 4.6 crore, DC Masud added.

Earlier, the DB arrested nine alleged members of a gold smuggling syndicate from the boarding bridge-2 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport along with foreign currencies, including Saudi Riyal and Malaysian Ringgit worth about Tk 35 lakh while they were trying to go to Malaysia on the night June 2.

Following their statements, later another DB team arrested ringleader of the syndicate Nazrul Islam Liton from his Purana Paltan residence and recovered 70 gold bars weighing 8kgs, Tk 3 lakh in cash and 5,000 Saudi Riyals from his possession in the early hours of June 3.

During interrogation in remand, the 10 arrested gold smugglers disclosed the names of Kamrul and Shamsuddin.

Following their information, the DB conducted simultaneous drives in Paltan thana area yesterday and arrested the two gold smugglers along with 80 gold bars, DC Masud said.
