Detectives in Dhaka have arrested two youths while they were preparing to fly for Syria to join Islamic State militants.

Investigators said 26-year-old Asif Adnan is son of a former judge while 24-year-old Fazle Elahi Tanzil is son of an incumbent senior bureaucrat.

Adnan has completed his graduation in economics from Dhaka University while Tanzil has done his A-Level.

Five Islamist militants including the two were held in separate drives in different parts of the capital, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The three other arrestees are Harkatul Jihad (Huji) members, the official added.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police also seized explosives, bomb making materials and electronic circuits from the possession of three detainees.

Later, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner (media) of detective police, told reporters at a press conference that the two suspected JMB men were actually members of Ansarulla Bangla Team.

“All the five arrestees belong to well reputed and established families,” he said.

HUJI MILITANTS ARRESTED WITH EXPLOSIVES

The three Huji men – Saiful Islam, 24, Shafiqul Islam Shafiq, 35, Mohammad Hasanullah, 24 - were arrested from Rampura around 7:00pm yesterday.

They were arrested along with explosives, bomb-making materials, electronic circuits used for remote-controlled explosion, and a laptop, Monirul said.

“They confessed their active involvement with Huji.”

“Saiful, a final year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Islamic University of Technology in Gazipur, made the circuit,” he said.

“He (Saiful) made the circuit under advice of a ‘senior’ and the supervision of one other,” he added. The identities of these two people were not disclosed.

The materials were to be used to create chaos in the country, the detective said.

ANSARULLA MEMBERS INSPIRED BY al-QAEDA VIDEO

Asif Adnan, 26, and Fazle Elahi Tanjil, 24, confessed their involvement with the Ansarulla Bangla Team upon primary interrogation, the DB official said.

Asif completed his honours and masters from the department of economics at University of Dhaka and Tanjil had completed his O and A-Level education.

They were held upon intelligence obtained from one Noki, a detained member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) who was arrested recently, he added.

“Asif was arrested from Eskaton and Tanjil from Shegunbagicha in the capital in the early hours of today (Thursday),” he said.

“They were inspired by the al-Qaeda video released recently on the web and was planning to wage Jihad in Bangladesh to establish Islamic rule.”
