2 cops, source held for abducting NGO official in Kurigram

Two police constables and their source were held on Thursday while distributing ransom among themselves which they got for kidnapping a local NGO official at Sadar upazila in Kurigram.
The law enforcers also rescued the victim, Maidul Islam, director Gram Unnayan Sangstha - a local NGO, Thursday, a day into his abduction.
The victim and police sources said, constable Atikuzzaman, Mamunur Rashid, Shah Alam and Manu Maker, a source of Mashiur and a sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police, kidnapped Maidul at gunpoint at Collegepara area around 6:00pm.
Maidul was returning home after meeting his younger brother there.
The abductors detained Maidul at a house in Mogalbasa area in the town and demanded Tk one lakh ransom from his family.
The abductors finally managed to extort at Tk ten thousand through bKash.
After bargaining the amount with the victim’s family, Maidul’s younger brother sent the money through bKash.
On information, police followed one of the abductors, Manu Maker, when he went to an agent of bKash to withdraw the money.
At one stage, a police team led by sub-inspector Abdul Gafur caught Atikuzzaman, Mamunur Rashid and Manu Maker red-handed around 12:00am Thursday when they were distributing the ransom money at Sadar Hospital Intersection.
Another constable involved with incident managed to flee the spot sensing the presence of the law enforcers.
Maidul was rescued half an hour later of the arrest.
Victim’s family filed an extortion case with Kurigram Sadar Police Station in this regard.
The arrestees were sent to jail after the law enforcers produced them before a court in Kurigram.
