2 BGB men killed in Khagrachhari grenade blast

Two members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were killed and four injured when a grenade went off accidentally during training in Khagrachhari cantonment area this afternoon.

The deceased are Nayek Subedar Mohammad Abul Kashem and Sepoy Mohammad Hasan, Commander of BGB battalion-16 Lt Col Khaled Bin Yusuf told our Khagrachhari correspondent.

The explosion took place when BGB members were receiving training at the firing range in Khagrachhari Cantonment area at 11:25am, the official said.

As Hasan tried to throw the grenade, it went off in his hand as he could not handle it properly, he said.

Abul Kashem also suffered serious injuries as he was standing next to Hasan during the training, he added.

Hasan and Kashem were whisked off to the medical centre of the cantonment where doctors declared them dead.

The four injured BGB men – Captain Tayefur, Nayek Subedar Md Masud, Lance Corporal Md Siraj and Sepoy Moshirul -- were sent to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) by a helicopter, BGB official Yusuf told The Daily Star around 1:45pm.

They are all members of the BGB battalion-16 in Ramgarh of Khagrachhari.
