18 killed in road crashes

As the time of spending the happiest days of the year came, 18 souls could not make it to their destinations this Eid-ul-Fitr.

At least 18 people have died in road crashes in Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Tangail, Noakhali and Bhola during the Eid holiday.

Four of them were killed in a road accident as a private car plunged into a roadside ditch in Shiddhirganj upazila of Narayanganj.

The deceased are identified as -- Sumon, Pintu, Salam and Abdullah, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
 
The Chashara-bound car lost its control over the steering on Dhaka-Narayanganj highway’s link road at Jalkuri area, said Anisur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Shiddhirganj Police Station.

The four died on the spot and their bodies have been sent to the Narayanganj General Hospital.

Meanwhile, two people died on Dhaka-Mawa highway at Srinagar upazila of Munshiganj.

One of the deceased is Munna Mia, 40, a lumberjack from Faridpur. The identity of the other victim remained unknown, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

They were illegally travelling on a pickup van to reach home for Eid-ul-Fitr, said Sheikh Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Srinagar Police Station.

At a point of their journey, they fall from the back of the van and another tailing bus squeezed them, the official added.

They died instantly on the spot.

The bodies were sent to Srinagar Police Station.

Two others were killed in a road crash on Dhaka-Tangail highway at Mirzapur upazila in Tangail yesterday.

The accident occurred around 2:00pm when a north-bound homegoers-laden truck from Dhaka collided with another truck and the two people fall from the truck at Satiachara area, reports our Tangail correspondent quoting highway police.

Of the two people, one was died on the spot and another was died on the way to the Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital, they added.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, police said adding that the poor people were riding on the truck to go home along with others with cheap fare.

At least six people, five from a family, died and 10 others were injured as a passenger-laden bus fall into a roadside ditch at Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali.

The deceased are -- Khokon, 38, Shirin Akter, 30, Shahed, 11, Kohinur, 5, and another anonymous, reports our Noakhali correspondent.

The driver of Ramganj-bound Balaka Express from Chittagong, lost control over the wheels and fall into the ditch near Barkot area of the upazila, said Ilias Sharif, superintendent of Noakhali police .

In Bhola, at least four were killed and another were 15 injured in a road crash near Kartarhat area of Bhola-Charfashion road under Charfasion Upazila of the district this morning.

Among the deceased, two were identified as -- Salauddin, 30, of Aligaon village and Helaluddin, 17, son of Kanchan Majhi of Khodejabag village under Charfashion upazila. One unidentified, 35 was also sent to Bhola Sadar Hospital for autopsy among two others, said Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge of Charfashion Police Station.

According to witnesses, Bhola Express, a Chittagong-Charfashion bus fell into a roadside ditch losing its control while going to Charfashion around 7:00am.
