At least 17 people were detained in different spots of the capital city of Dhaka during today’s hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting death penalty of its chief Motiur Rahman Nizami for war crimes.
Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said the lawmen picked up 17 pickets in the capital during the shutdown.
Four of them were jailed for six months for violence. A mobile court handed over the punishment. Earlier in the morning, they were picked up in Mollartek area of Dhakkhin Khan as they brought out a procession in support of the hartal.
A fifth picket was released due to his serious illness, said Shamim-Ur-Rashid Talukder, officer-in-charge of the Dhakkhin Khan Police Station.
The former Al-Badr chief was found guilty by a special tribunal and sentenced to death for crimes committed against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
