A murder case has been filed against 15 people in connection with killing of a businessman in Comilla town yesterday.

The victim Ahsan Habib Sumu, 38, was shot dead while trying to save a neighbour during a clash between two factions of ruling Awami League-backed student wing at Govt Victoria College in the district Thursday.

The victim, a resident of Monoherpur in the town, was a sand trader.

Sumu's elder brother Habebush Saherin lodged the case with Kotwali Police Station accusing 15 people including Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist Rasel around 2:15pm yesterday, reports a correspondent from Comilla quoting Khorshed Alam, officer-in-charge of the police station.

However, identity of Rasel could not be specified as police did not want to reveal details "for the interest of the investigation".

None has been arrested so far in this connection, the OC said.

Earlier, locals said supporters of Saleh Ahmed, former general secretary of BCL unit of the college, engaged in an altercation with Chuttu, brother of Shajib Chakrabarti alias Gittu.

Gittu is the president of Munshefbari unit of BCL. As news of the altercation spread, Gittu along with his supporters rushed to the campus and the two sides engaged in a chase and counter chase.

At one stage, supporters of Saleh swooped on the residence of Gittu and Chuttu at Munshefbari in Monoherpur and attacked Pritom, a cousin of the siblings.

Witnessing the incident from a neighbouring house, Sumu rushed to the spot to save Pritom. But the attackers shot Sumu in the back, leaving him critically injured.

He was immediately rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. Pritom was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition became critical.

Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, inspector (investigation) of Kotwali Police Station, said a BCL faction had shot the trader dead.
