14 Indian fishermen held, sent to jail

A court here yesterday sent 14 Indian fishermen to jail for entering and fishing in Bangladesh waters illegally.

Earlier, Bangladesh Navy arrested them from the Bay of Bengal, around 80 nautical miles away from Mongla Sea Port in Khulna, on Monday.

With this, the Naval forces caught 42 Indian fishermen from three spots.

On Monday, they also seized the Indian trawler FB Hansaraj and later handed the arrestees over to law enforces.

The arrestees hail from Bhuban Nagar village in Kakdwip upazila of Dakkhin 24 Parganas district in Paschimbanga state, India.

In Pirojpur, local people yesterday caught two alleged sea robbers with firearms from Badura Fishery Port in Sadar upazila and handed them over to police, reports our correspondent.

The arrestees are Sohrab Hossain, 40, and Abdur Rahim, 30, of Mathbaria upazila in the district.

Pirojpur Sadar Police Station (PS) sources said, around 9.30am, locals caught the robbers from a trawler at the port when they were moving suspiciously.

They beat them up and informed police. Critically injured Rahim was admitted to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital.

Police later recovered two guns, a grill cutter, three sharp iron bars 49 bullets and a trawler.
