Bangladesh Navy detained 14 Indian fishermen for intruding into the naval territory of Bangladesh. They were sued under a special act and imprisoned.
The fishermen fishing near the fairway buoy in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, said Manjur Elahi, sub-inspector of Mongla Police Station, quoting the navy.
“A fishing trawler ‘FB Dayamoi’ used by the men was seized,” he told our Bagerhat correspondent today.
A patrol team of the navy arrested the fishermen around 9:30am on Wednesday, some 70 nautical miles off from Mongla seaport, sources inside the police and navy said.
The detained were Nitya Biswas, 45, Gobinda Sarker, 32, Paran Biswas, 26, Ripon Biswas, 24, Gopal Manna, 34, Tarun Biswas, 40, Sudhanna Biswas, 28, Sanchit Haldar, 40, Bidhan Biswas, 35, Sanjay Biswas, 44, Biswanath Das, 26, Nimai Biswas, 28, Rameshwar Biswas and Pradip Das.
The Indian fishermen were handed over to Mongla Police Station on Thursday.
A local court under a special law sent them to prison after Bangladesh Navy filed a case in this regard, the OC added.
