11 missing as trawlers sink in two rivers

At least 10 people went missing when a trawler capsized in the Meghna near Bhairab Bhairab upazila of the district yesterday.

The identity of the deceased, however, could not be known till filing of this report around 7:30pm.

The vessel was carrying at least 35 people to Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria from Bhairab Bazar of the district, said Badrul Alam, officer in-charge of Bhairab Police Station.

The trawler capsized around 3:00pm. Most of its other passengers, however swam ashore.

On information, a fire-fighting unit from of Bhairab rushed to the spot and started a search operation to rescue the missing people.

After the incident, police detained two staff of the vessel—Shahin and Zahid -- for carrying passengers more than the capacity.

Away in Pabna, a man went missing when a sand-laden trawler capsized in Boral River near Bhangura upazila yesterday, reports our Pabna correspondent.

The victim is Abdul Alim, 35, of Ratanpur village in Faridpur upazila of the district.

Police said, a sand-laden trawler with 10 passengers on board capsized in the river around 3:30pm. Alim went missing while nine other passengers could swim ashore.
