10 killed in Assam militant attack

At least ten people including two children and four women were killed in two separate attacks by suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) insurgents at a village in Assam’s communally-sensitive Kokrajhar and Baksa districts since late last night.

A group of heavily armed extremists descended on two houses at Balaparajan Village-1 under Goreswar police station around 1:00am and opened indiscriminate fire, killing seven persons on the spot, Inspector General of Police L R Bishnoi told the media in Guwahati, capital city of Assam.

Late last night, three people were killed allegedly by the NDFB rebels in Baksa district which is a part of the Bodoland Territorial Council in Kokrajhar, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Assam government has rushed about 1,000 law enforcers to control the situation and have asked the army to be in standby as these areas had seen large scale riots between Bodos and non-Bodos two years ago.

NDFB has been fighting for a separate homeland for the region's ethnic Bodo people.

The latest round of violence comes just days after voting in parliamentary elections in the region on April 24. Ends
