Ten BCL men have been suspended from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College for their alleged link with Wednesday’s murder of a JCD leader on the campus.

In an immediate response to the move, BNP has called off its half-day hartal planned for tomorrow in the city.

“We have withdrawn the strike following the suspension and assurance by police to arrest the Bangladesh Chhatra League men by next seven days,” said MA Haque, president of Sylhet city BNP.

Touhidul Islam, the hospitability secretary of college unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and a fourth year MBBS student, was beaten to death at a dormitory allegedly by some Bangladesh Chhatra League men on Wednesday night.

The decision to suspend the BCL men taken at an emergency meeting today, Nanda Kurmar Sinha, vice-principal of the medical college, told our Sylhet correspondent.

The suspended BCL men are: college unit BCL president Soumen Deb, general secretary Saiful Hai, Rafi, Hafiz, Pathan, Antardip, Abu Shahan Fahim, Shariful, Jubayer Ibne Khayer and Ripon.

Following the death, the college authorities on Thursday closed the institution till June 12 while college unit of JCD called an indefinite strike on the campus and at all educational institutions in the city for Sunday.

Towhid was called out of their rented house where he lived with his mother and sister and taken to a room of Abu Sina Hostel of the college and was beaten by some BCL men around 7:00pm, said police.

He died at the college hospital around 8:00pm.

The victim's uncle Anwar Hossain Matabbar filed a case against the 10 BCL men and 10 unnamed others on Thursday.

The college authorities also formed a five-member probe committee on Thursday and asked it to submit a report within seven days after investigation into the murder.
