1.7kg gold seized at Ctg airport

Customs officials seized 14 gold bars worth around Tk 70 lakh from two people at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong late yesterday night.
The gold was seized from two passengers identified as Md Sabuj from Comilla and Golam Morshed from Raozan of Chittagong, said Othelo Chowdhury, assistant commissioner of the airport customs.
Officials seized the gold from the duo after they arrived at the airport from Muskat on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight that landed at 11:00pm, he said.
The gold, weighing around 1.7 kilogrammes, were found after a search had been conducted on them on grounds of suspicion, he added.
The two were not detained but the gold was seized from them and a departmental complaint was filed over the incident under customs act, the official said.
According to a Bangladesh Bank circular, it is legal to bring in gold upto two kilogrammes from abroad only after clearing the duty charges, Othelo Chowdhury added.
