'Wrong Treatment': DU to drop case over student's death
The Dhaka University authorities have decided to withdraw the case over the death of a student, allegedly due to wrong treatment at the capital's Central Hospital on last Thursday.
DU Proctor AM Amzad Ali told The Daily Star yesterday that they made the decision as the hospital authorities expressed their willingness to stand by and offer financial assistance to the family of the student -- Afia Jahin Chaity, 20, a first-year student of zoology department.
He added the hospital authorities assured them of forming a committee to look into the allegation of mistreatment.
“If found guilty, those responsible will face punishment,” he said. “Since her death triggered chaos in the country, we have decided to drop the case to restore peace.”
The announcement was made at a joint press conference organised by the DU and the Central Hospital at the hospital building yesterday.
Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station where the case was filed, said last night that they were yet to receive any application regarding the withdrawal of the case.
Afia, originally from Chapainawabganj, was admitted to the hospital on last Wednesday after doctors there diagnosed her with "acute myeloblastic leukaemia", a type of blood cancer, according to her medical file.
But just before she died around 5:30pm the next day, doctors confirmed that she had dengue fever, DU students claimed.
Her death triggered a violent protest. Around 200-300 DU students stormed the hospital and vandalised several rooms and other things on the first floor.
The DU authorities sued nine people, including the director and consultant of the hospital.
In protest against the case, doctors around the country refrained from treating patients at private healthcare facilities across the country on Tuesday, causing immense sufferings.
